Constable Mia Lay, 20, died early Friday when the patrol car hit a tree on Gibbons St in inner Sydney. The Volkswagen Tiguan had been sent to a stolen vehicle job in nearby Glebe.
Police believe it reached at least 150 kilometres per hour over about 100 metres from Redfern Police Station. Lay was in the passenger seat and was killed on impact.
The 24-year-old driver suffered minor facial injuries. Investigators are examining whether the speed was too high.
