Canberra's Civic Library shut until December after water damage and mould
The Civic Library in Canberra's city centre will remain closed until December while specialist contractors fix water damage, roof leaks and mould.
A water leak discovered during roof inspections has damaged the 20-year-old building's roof, ceiling, walls and floor. The City and Environment Directorate said surface mould was also found in the wall and floor cavity.
The library will stay closed while specialist contractors remediate the damaged areas and conduct cleaning and treatment work. Before reopening, testing will be done to ensure the building is safe for staff and visitors.
Library users can return books to other branches and access services there instead. The $14 million Civic Library opened in December 2006.
In the past few years, it handled about 5 per cent of all branch visits across the network.
