Coalition's immigration policy lacks full budget office analysis
The Coalition says its migration plan is budget-neutral. But it doesn't have full analysis from the PBO.
Angus Taylor and Jane Hume, a Liberal deputy, have said many times that the Coalition worked with the independent Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO). But sources told The Guardian the PBO has not finished a full analysis.
The new policy caps migration at 100,000 for two years. Then it would go to 130,000 and 160,000 in the years after that.
Taylor's team used internal analysis and existing costs during design. They plan formal PBO costing before the election.
Business leaders and universities warn the cuts are random and will make shortages worse in health, aged care, and other key areas. The PBO would not comment on these claims.
- 100,000 net overseas migration
- Migration cap year 1-2
- 130,000
- Migration rate year 3
- 160,000

Why it mattersVoters can't know the real cost of a major policy if it hasn't been checked by someone independent. This raises questions about how open the Coalition is being before the election.
AustraliaIf implemented, lower migration would reshape Australia's labour market and economy, particularly affecting healthcare, aged care and university finances, but the full budget impact remains unverified.
