Riverina State party refused registration before Victoria's election
The party says it has more than 1000 members, but the commission could not verify at least 500 eligible ones.
The Riverina State party, with roots going back more than a century, has been refused registration in Victoria. The Victorian Electoral Commission could not verify at least 500 eligible members on the state's electoral roll.
The members also had to belong to no other party. Party president David Landini disagreed with the decision and is prepared to appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
The appeal would come too late for this election, Mr Landini said. The party is blocked from registering with the commission for six months.
The party has also applied to register federally and in New South Wales. The party wanted its name on up to 200,000 or 250,000 ballots.
Mr Landini said more than 1000 people were registered with the party, though the commission could not verify the required number.
