Darby Street festival draws crowd as traders double
Newcastle's Darby Street retail festival drew a packed crowd on November 7. Twice as many local traders took part compared to last year.
Darby Street in Newcastle held its second retail festival on Saturday, November 7. Twice as many traders took part this year compared to last year's first event.
The crowd was large. The festival offered early Christmas shopping and sales.
Local retailers are fighting online shopping and rising costs. Festival organiser Sarah Madden said foot traffic on main streets has dropped noticeably.
"We are definitely seeing more hesitation," she said. One Shortland couple confirmed the pressure.
They had just cancelled their credit card that week. They needed to live within their means as fuel and grocery costs strained their weekly budget.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported household fuel spending rose more than 5 per cent in September. This came after the fuel excise relief ended.
The festival secured City of Newcastle funding to return next year. Organisers hope it will help local businesses through what they see as a tough economic period.

Why it mattersLocal retailers are using community events to fight online shopping and cost-of-living pressure. For shoppers, the festival shows where discounts and deals are available nearby.
