Kyle MacLachlan writes memoir on working with Lynch and Dune failure
MacLachlan's memoir traces his journey from Lynch's failed Dune to becoming known for eccentric, dark characters.
Kyle MacLachlan is known for playing strange, dark characters. The pattern started with David Lynch's Dune (1984), a critical and commercial flop.
Lynch later gave him the Blue Velvet script, and MacLachlan almost turned it down. "I was immediately drawn in and enthralled," he recalls.
Blue Velvet launched his career. It showed Lynch that MacLachlan could bring earnest vulnerability to unsettling roles.
His new memoir, Fictional Selves, explores this arc. It also covers his self-doubt and people-pleasing tendency.
He wrote it partly to preserve his life story for his son Callum, 18. His father died in 2011 without sharing his inner thoughts.
MacLachlan grew up in Yakima, Washington. His grounded upbringing kept him distant from Hollywood's fame machine.
