Hamilton convinces Liberals to lock in superannuation rules
Garth Hamilton says he has majority support to rule out early super withdrawal for first home buyers.
Garth Hamilton is a leading Liberal backbencher pushing his party to rule out any changes to superannuation access. He's opposing senior colleagues who want first home buyers to use their retirement savings.
At the past two elections, the Coalition proposed up to $50,000 early withdrawal to help with deposits. Shadow Housing Minister Andrew Bragg and Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson have pushed super-for-housing schemes in recent months.
Hamilton told ABC's Insiders program he has majority party support to drop the idea. He's spoken to Opposition Leader Angus Taylor about keeping the current rules without change.
Hamilton framed it as respecting what everyday Australians want: greater security in retirement.
