Illegal dumping turns fringe Melbourne roadside into toxic wasteland
A 100-metre stretch of road north of Melbourne was filmed. It was completely covered with household waste, cardboard, furniture and mattresses.
A roadside at Wollert, 39 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD, has become a sprawling dump. At least 100 metres of road is covered in household waste, cardboard, plastic, broken furniture and mattresses.
Industry figure Kane Andrewartha filmed the destruction and posted it online this week. The video got more than 900,000 views.
The illegal dumping crisis in Victoria's outer suburbs has worsened a lot over the past five to six years, Andrewartha said. A similar incident affected Truganina, west of the CBD, where dumped waste blocked residents' access to their homes.
Andrewartha blamed rising landfill costs and said the state needed a campaign to teach people about waste responsibility.
