Victoria's corruption inquiry opens with warning of grift and thuggery
Victoria's royal commission into state construction corruption opens hearings Wednesday.
A royal commission into corruption on Victorian government construction sites holds its opening hearing in Melbourne on Wednesday. The inquiry was Premier Ben Carroll's first commitment when he became Labor leader in July.
Carroll replaced Jacinta Allan, who had resisted calls for one. In August, Carroll appointed Chris Kourakis, the former chief justice of South Australia, to lead the inquiry.
Carroll acknowledged there had been grift, thuggery and violence on taxpayer-funded construction sites. The inquiry will examine corruption, criminal conduct and serious misconduct.
Former premiers could be called to give evidence.
