Ballarat burn escapes control ahead of fire season
A 100-by-100-metre fire escaped on Boundary Road in Brown Hill, Victoria, on Sunday after a private burn spread into grassland.
CFA firefighters arrived at the property around 2.40pm on Sunday, October 18, and brought the fire under control by 3.29pm. Winds gusted at 31kmh with temperatures around 21.9 degrees.
Authorities are urging Ballarat residents planning burn-offs ahead of the fire season to register them, supervise them closely, and keep water and equipment on site. Tree roots or old stumps could continue to burn for some time before flaring up on hot, windy days.
The region expects heavy grass growth from recent rain, which will dry out over the next two months and become a high fuel load by summer.
