South Melbourne made history by becoming the first lower-league team to win the Australia Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout against Melbourne Victory. The match was locked at 1-1 after extra time, with South equalising in the 117th minute.
South goalkeeper Javier Lopez was the hero in the shootout, saving two penalties. Victory missed two of their spot-kicks, including one from captain Jason Davidson.
A crowd of 29,911 packed AAMI Park for the blockbuster final. The win strengthens South Melbourne's bid for an A-League licence.
