Lifeline calls nearly double in Canberra despite having most providers
Calls to Lifeline Canberra nearly doubled in just one year. This happened even though Canberra has the most mental health providers per capita of any Australian city.
Lifeline Canberra received 36,000 calls in just one year, up from 19,000 the previous year. This is surprising because Canberra has more mental health workers per capita than any other Australian city.
Yet having services is not the same as being able to reach them when you need help most. Callers say loneliness, isolation, separation, and money worries are the main reasons they call.
Many call while waiting between appointments. They need someone to talk to right now.
CEO Adam Miller said people need support when they need it, not weeks later. Canberra marked World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.
Lifeline is approaching its one-millionth call since 1971.
