ACT bill would cut strata meeting quorum to 25%
New ACT legislation would cut the attendance threshold for strata meetings from 50% to 25%. This lets apartment owners make decisions faster.
Canberra apartment owners could find it easier to make decisions at strata meetings. A new bill was brought in by ACT Attorney General Tara Cheyne.
The Housing and Consumer Affairs Legislation Amendment Bill 2026 would lower the minimum number needed for general meetings from 50 per cent to 25 per cent. A Legislative Assembly inquiry into strata management led to this change.
The bill also removes a 28-day waiting period. Now decisions take effect the next day instead.
For renters, landlords can now turn off the gas. They don't need to keep the connection open once no gas appliances remain in a property.
Tenants cannot ask for a rent cut simply because a gas appliance was replaced with an electric option.
