One Nation candidate charges $15 to campaign launch for safety
One Nation's Benambra hopeful Kellie Sheppard justified charging $15 per ticket as a way to keep out hostile visitors.
Kellie Sheppard launched her campaign for the Victorian seat of Benambra on Tuesday. The event at the Blazing Stump Hotel in Wodonga had a $15 entry fee.
Sheppard said the fee had two purposes: raising funds and keeping out troublemakers. She explained why.
"Somebody that is not a One Nation supporter who might have something awful to say or do is less likely to spend money to come." Volunteers had already raised security concerns.
Sheppard could not confirm whether the money went directly to her campaign or into a party pool. She said One Nation had less money than major parties.
The competition-winning poet and former journalist plans to attend community events rather than knock on doors during her campaign.
