Sharon AI buys Ettamogah paper mill for $50 million
Sharon AI is an Australian-American AI company. It bought the Ettamogah paper mill from Visy for $50 million on 29 June 2026.
Sharon AI bought the Ettamogah paper mill and 302 hectares of land from Visy for $50 million. The purchase on 29 June was only for the land, which is why the price was lower than the $85 million Visy spent on land and assets in 2019.
Visy will keep operating from the site. Visy will lease it from Sharon AI.
This investment shows serious AI funding coming to the NSW Border region for the first time. Albury's mayor Kevin Mack said the city welcomes opportunities.
These opportunities create jobs and support regional growth. Community concern about a planned AI data centre exists.
An online petition against it has gathered 350 signatures. A development application has not yet been lodged.

Why it mattersAI data centres need enormous amounts of electricity and water. This raises questions about whether local communities will have to pay for infrastructure upgrades to support a major private development.
AustraliaAlbury region could see significant jobs and economic investment from AI development, but residents are demanding clarity on electricity, water use, and whether local households will fund infrastructure upgrades.
