Canberra approves 246-apartment complex for Dickson Tradies site

ACT planning authority greenlit the first stage: 246 apartments across 6 and 13-storey buildings.

Canberra's planning authority last week approved the first stage of a new apartment complex on the Dickson Tradies Club site. The approval includes a six-storey and a 13-storey building with 246 residences.

The buildings also have 10 shops and underground parking. Over 600 apartments are planned across the full development.

The Tradies club will keep operating on the ground floor. The Dickson Squash Club, on the site for nearly 60 years, will be demolished.

Developers considered but rejected building replacement squash courts. They cited high cost and limited commercial appeal.

Local residents object to the scale. The 13-storey building far exceeds anything built in Dickson before.

It will cast shadows and create wind tunnels. A residents group spokesperson said the community felt their concerns were not heard despite consultation.

Why it mattersThis signals the ACT planning authority is willing to approve large-scale projects even when locals object, reshaping Dickson's character.

AustraliaDickson residents will see major construction and a transformed streetscape; the loss of the squash club removes a 60-year community facility.
