Music in the Podium ends after 28 years as council launches new series
Lake Macquarie City Council will replace the cancelled Music in the Podium with eight free performances called Lakeside Sounds, starting January 8.
Music in the Podium ran free for 28 years but closed because it could not secure enough sponsorship. Rising costs after COVID made it hard to keep going.
The event drew generations to Warners Bay foreshore and boosted local businesses. Lake Macquarie City Council will launch Lakeside Sounds instead.
The new series has eight free performances on alternate Friday nights at Warners Bay and Toronto foreshores starting January 8. Council committed $20,000 to fund the series.
Each musician receives $2,200 plus tax and superannuation. Council has received more than 70 expressions of interest from performers.
This is the first year, and council plans to seek feedback before shaping future events.
