High Court to hear Pauline Hanson's racial abuse case challenge
Australia's High Court has agreed to hear Pauline Hanson's appeal of a ruling that she racially vilified Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi.
The High Court will hear Pauline Hanson's challenge to her conviction for telling up to Senator Faruqi to 'piss off back to Pakistan' in a 2022 tweet. The One Nation leader argues that Australia's racial discrimination laws breach freedom of political communication.
The Federal Court upheld the original finding in July after Justice Angus Stewart ruled Hanson's reply was 'seriously humiliating'. Hanson applied for special leave to appeal in August.
Senator Faruqi posted after Queen Elizabeth's death that she could not mourn 'the leader of a racist empire'. Hanson's response triggered the legal action.
The High Court will decide whether preventing offensive speech is a lawful purpose of discrimination law.
