Bathla collapse leaves hundreds of Sydney homes half-built and abandoned
Bathla Group's $3.4 billion collapse halted 45 Sydney residential sites, leaving buyers stranded.
Developer Bathla Group collapsed in August, leaving hundreds of Sydney homes half-built. Construction stopped at 45 sites.
About a dozen are in Sydney's west, including Box Hill, Rouse Hill, Marsden Park and Pemulwuy. Buyers who paid before homes were built, like Rinnah Roque in Box Hill, don't know when work will restart.
Builders won't guarantee work by a developer short on cash or stand behind work already done. Property economics professor Lyndall Bryant warned some sites could sit empty and become wastelands.
This would damage property values and community ties. Some private equity firms have taken control of projects and are racing to find new builders.
Blacktown Council has eight stalled Bathla projects and The Hills Shire has four. Both councils are owed money and facing gaps in infrastructure.
