160 drivers caught impaired in Canberra's record month
ACT police caught 160 impaired drivers in August, 72 over the alcohol limit and 88 with drugs in their system.
August was the busiest month on record for impaired driving arrests in Canberra. Police conducted more than 24,000 breath tests and more than 400 roadside drug tests across static operations and mobile patrols.
Of those caught, 72 drivers exceeded the legal blood-alcohol limit and 88 had drugs including cannabis, methamphetamine, MDMA and cocaine. Detective Inspector Mark Steel said he was alarmed by the sheer volume.
He said impaired driving is one of the fatal five factors behind serious road crashes and urged drivers to choose not to drive if they plan to drink or use drugs.
