Coalition commits $50 million to mental health and plans new youth hospital
Coalition pledges $50 million workforce fund and new youth mental health hospital if elected in November.
Victoria's Coalition announced a sweeping mental health reset for the state if elected this November. Within 100 days, they would create a $50 million fund to address critical workforce shortages and skills gaps.
The Coalition also commits to developing a Youth Mental Health Centre of Excellence overseen by Orygen and allocating $5 million to masterplan a new standalone youth mental health hospital in Parkville.
The plan includes separate reviews of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Levy, the system's independent watchdog and Victoria's delivery of royal commission recommendations. Victoria's mental health system has faced mounting problems despite accepting every royal commission recommendation in 2021, with youth mental health particularly strained.
