Toyota targets 15% fuel savings with new hybrid engine for Corolla
Toyota is developing a new hybrid engine targeting 15% better fuel economy for the next-generation Corolla.
Toyota is developing a new four-cylinder petrol engine for hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. The engine will likely debut in the next Corolla.
The engine will come in naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. Smaller, lighter electric motors and power units are being designed alongside it.
The improvements will reduce friction and heat loss. They will also cut electrical losses.
The new engine is much more compact. This lets it fit into vehicle platforms designed for battery-electric powertrains.
A 15 per cent fuel gain on current hybrids would cut consumption to around 3.0 litres per 100 kilometres for the Yaris. This would potentially allow a single tank to reach 1200 kilometres.

Why it mattersBetter fuel economy means lower running costs for hybrid buyers. Smaller engines let carmakers design lighter, more aerodynamic vehicles.
AustraliaAustralian drivers who buy Toyota hybrids like the Corolla and RAV4 could save significantly on fuel costs, while the compact design enables more affordable vehicle options across the range.
