Bistro Penny team opens Italian restaurant Scarpetta in Newcastle

Chefs Joel Humphreys and Nic Wong are opening Scarpetta, a modern Italian restaurant on Beaumont Street.

Scarpetta opens this month in the former Northern Star cafe, a site with deep Italian history in Hamilton. The name comes from the Italian tradition of wiping the last sauce from your plate with bread.

The menu focuses on seasonal Italian classics: house-made pasta, heirloom tomatoes, figs, crisp fried zucchini flowers and fresh seafood. Bread is baked daily using sourdough starter from Bistro Penny.

Head chef Alex Hunter has worked at Bennelong in Sydney. He learned Italian cooking at The Beltree in the Hunter Valley.

Wine educator Florence Diffey has curated a list of lesser-known Italian wine regions. The restaurant seats about 40 inside and 15 outside.
