Qantas opens Sydney to New York non-stop, saving about three hours

Qantas will fly non-stop from Sydney to New York starting mid-2028, a world-first route. The journey takes around 18 hours, cutting about three hours compared to flights that stop elsewhere.
Tickets start selling August 2027. The airline is using special Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, each fitted with an extra 20,000 litre fuel tank.
The 238-seat planes can fly for 22 hours non-stop. Qantas has ordered 12 of these aircraft; the first arrives April 2027.
This is the second ultra long-haul route under Project Sunrise, following Sydney to London flights starting October 2027.
