Quilpie offers $20,000 to anyone who builds and moves to the outback town
Quilpie, 950 kilometres west of Brisbane, offers $20,000 to anyone who builds a house and lives there for 12 months.
The outback town is preparing to sell 60 residential blocks next year and hopes the grant will attract newcomers. Mayor Ben Hall said the council aimed to grow the population to 1,000 and was looking to attract at least 10 new residents.
Land costs between $25,000 and $30,000 per block, though building expenses in the outback run higher than in south-east Queensland. The town has hospitals, schools, shops, and twice-weekly flights to Brisbane.
Families with older children can access subsidised boarding school options. Hall pitched Quilpie as a safe community where kids play outside and cars stay where owners park them.
