Appin earthquake zone active again with two weekend tremors
Two small earthquakes struck Appin over the weekend, bringing the total to four recorded tremors in the region in three weeks.
Geoscience Australia recorded a magnitude 1.5 earthquake on Saturday morning at 4:24am near Appin, followed by a smaller magnitude 0.8 quake later that evening at 9:31pm. The two tremors struck just 5 kilometres below the surface west of Menangle Road.
On August 28, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake hit the same area, the fifth strongest in the region since 2000. Two weeks later on September 9, a magnitude 2.4 tremor rumbled below the surface.
Appin and Douglas Park have been the site of almost all earthquakes in this region for more than 25 years, making it the state's most active seismic zone.
