Over 100 US expats celebrate Democratic sweep at Sydney pubs

More than 100 Americans in Sydney gathered to watch Democrats win historic Congressional control.

More than 100 US expats packed into a function space at the Keg and Brew to watch midterm results roll in on Wednesday. The mood shifted from nervous anticipation early in the day to champagne-popping celebrations within hours.

Democrats' historic wins became clear. Katrena Henderson, from North Carolina, said she had not been this excited about an election in a long time.

Her home state had flipped to Democrat. Cindy Herman-Jones moved to Australia from Texas almost 15 years ago.

She voted for the first time while abroad because she felt the stakes were too high to sit out. The gathering showed how engaged Americans abroad remain with their home country's politics despite living thousands of miles away.
