One Nation leader says he misspoke calling for total abortion ban
Mike Newman, One Nation's NSW leader, went back on what he said about wanting to ban all abortion.
One Nation's new NSW leader Mike Newman said at a rally the party wanted abortion stopped. On Wednesday, Newman said he had misspoken.
Newman said One Nation only opposes late-term and sex-selective abortion, not all abortion. Newman offered no evidence for claims about babies left in Petri dishes to die.
He also admitted he did not know how many late-term or sex-selective abortions happen in NSW. NSW Health data from 2020 checked 15,973 terminations.
Only 13 were flagged as sex-selective. Ten of those were likely reporting errors.
Newman appeared at the rally with anti-abortion activist Joanna Howe. She is backing a bill to ban sex-selection abortion.
The bill is due for a parliamentary vote.
