Two hikers rescued from Central Highlands after getting lost
Two walkers stranded near Mother Cummings Peak were found about 200 metres off-track and returned to safety just after midnight.
Two bushwalkers called police just after 8pm on Friday after becoming lost in the Mother Cummings Peak area of the Great Western Tiers. The bushwalkers had left the marked track, became disoriented and were unprepared to spend the night outdoors.
A ground search-and-rescue team deployed just an hour later. Officers located the pair about 200 metres from the track and returned them to their car just after midnight.
Tasmania Police urged all bushwalkers to carry warm clothes, food and emergency communication devices when heading into the highlands.
