Hobart hospital nurse chased to car, union demands safer parking
A Royal Hobart Hospital nurse was chased by about seven young men after her shift, highlighting safety risks from inadequate staff parking.
Audrey McAllister just finished her night shift just past 11pm on Monday and walked to her car parked at Queens Domain, roughly one kilometre from the hospital. A group of young men chased her, yelling as she passed.
Audrey McAllister ran to her car, locked the doors and called police. Audrey McAllister was not physically hurt but was left shaken.
Nurses often park at Queens Domain to avoid expensive inner-city fees, or because no closer spots exist. The area is poorly lit bushland, and the nearest dedicated carpark closes at 10pm.
The nursing union wants dedicated staff parking, a shuttle service or security escorts after night shifts, and subsidised rates. The Tasmanian government said it is undertaking safety risk assessments of the hospital entrances.
