One dead, 13 rescued in ocean rips as heat threatens NSW coast
A 50-year-old man died at Marley Beach and 13 others were rescued from rips last weekend; temperatures heading above 30 degrees.
A 50-year-old man drowned at Marley Beach on Thursday after getting into trouble in the water. Last weekend, when the mercury hit 31 degrees, 13 people were rescued from rips at Stanwell Park, Austinmer, Thirroul and Port Kembla beaches.
At Corrimal Beach, a man collapsed and required CPR before being revived and taken to hospital. Beach patrols don't start until Saturday.
Temperatures will reach 27 to 28 degrees on Friday and 30 to 31 degrees on Saturday, well above the September average. Surf Life Saving Illawarra urges swimmers to use rock pools or the only patrolled beach, North Wollongong, until patrols begin.
