Bendigo rescues magpie chick hanging from plastic ribbon
Wildlife workers rescued a magpie chick tangled in plastic ribbon two storeys above a Bendigo street.
City of Greater Bendigo workers used a cherry picker to lift a wildlife rescue team member above Bridge Street on September 15. The operation saved a trapped magpie chick.
Coliban Water office staff had spotted the chick hanging upside down next to its nest and called for help. The rescuers found one chick already dead inside the nest.
Another was caught by plastic ribbon around its leg. The surviving fledgling was taken to a vet for treatment.
Bendigo Wildlife Rescue member Avery Barnett Dacey said the plastic string's origin was unclear. She warned that birds will use anything they find.
With Halloween approaching, she urged people to switch to biodegradable decorations to protect wildlife.
