Pike critically ill after botched Tennessee execution
Christa Pike remains very ill after a failed lethal injection in Tennessee. Seven needle insertions left her arm burned.
Pike, 50, went through a botched execution attempt on September 30 in Tennessee using the drug pentobarbital. Medical reports show seven needle insertions left her arm swollen, burned and blistered.
Pike remained conscious throughout, telling prison guards: "my arm feels like it's about to burst open." Pentobarbital is meant to stop breathing and heart function.
But Pike continued breathing and even fell asleep on the execution table. Pike's legal team got an emergency order to stop any further execution attempts.
Lawyer Stephen Ferrell said her outlook remains unknown. She may not fully recover.
Long-term brain damage is possible. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review and cancelled all executions for the rest of 2026.
