Wollongong battery firm buys US plant near NASA to go global
Sicona Battery Technologies acquired American company Advano. It also got Advano's New Orleans manufacturing facility. This marks the Wollongong firm's move into a global platform.
Sicona Battery Technologies, based in Wollongong, acquired 100% of Advano. This included its pilot plant, labs, and cell-testing equipment.
It also included silicon anode patents near NASA's assembly facility in New Orleans. The deal brings Sicona's total patents to 151 across 46 families.
Sicona plans to scale the site into a Super Pilot facility. It will produce material for more than three million battery cells.
The company will continue serving Advano's US clients. It will maintain its planned demonstration plant in Port Kembla.
The battery cells will target AI data centres, robotics, drones, and electric aircraft. The move helps Sicona compete for US government contracts under new clean-tech rules.
