Nikita Tszyu claims he beat Ben Mahoney in split draw
Tszyu changed his mind and now insists he won the split-draw bout against Mahoney.
Tszyu and Mahoney fought to a split draw on the Gold Coast last month, with judges scoring 117-113 for Tszyu, 115-113 for Mahoney, and 114-114. After the result was announced, Tszyu surprised everyone by admitting in the ring he felt he had lost, a moment journalist Peter Badel called 'career suicide'.
On Wednesday, Tszyu reversed that assessment. Tszyu said he won the majority of middle rounds with better ring control and heavier punches.
Being inside the ring clouded his judgment, he explained. The 28-year-old hinted at a potential US fight later this year, possibly on an undercard for his brother Tim's world title bout.
