Nicholas Tadros, who lost his leg in a helicopter crash, takes his first flying
Nicholas Tadros, 14, took his first flying lesson four years after a SeaWorld crash killed his mother and took his leg.
Nicholas Tadros climbed into the cockpit for his first flying lesson over Sydney. Four years earlier, at age 10, he and his mother Vanessa boarded a SeaWorld helicopter for a joy flight over the Gold Coast.
Less than a minute after takeoff, it hit another helicopter. Four people died, including his mother.
Nicholas lost his leg and spent weeks in a coma. He then had 30 operations and years of rehab.
Despite the trauma, he refused to let fear stop him. His father Simon supported the choice to fly again.
"I've always said since hospital, I'm not going to let it stop me," Nicholas said. The journey back has taken real determination, but Nicholas has turned the sky from a place of loss into a place of hope.
