LGBTIQA+ veterans can restore records after federal apology
Federal government will formally apologise to LGBTIQA+ veterans discharged for their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Tasmanian defence force veterans faced discrimination and dishonourable discharge because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. They will receive a formal government apology.
They can apply to clear historical consensual homosexual offences from their records and get a Certificate of Honourable Service. Financial compensation remains uncertain.
However, crossbenchers pushed for it to acknowledge lost income, housing and jobs. Britain set up a 50 million euro compensation scheme in 2024, with Canada also providing payments.
The government will scrap a planned $5,000 cap on allied health services from Veterans' Affairs.
