NSW coal transition bill stalled in parliament as sides clash
A NSW bill designed to help coal-region workers transition to other jobs has not been debated despite dozens of sitting days.
The NSW Future Jobs and Investment Bill is meant to support thousands of workers moving away from coal jobs. The bill would fund alternative work paths, retraining, and skills mapping in coal-dependent regions like the Hunter.
Premier Chris Minns last week accused the crossbench of blocking the debate. Deputy Opposition Leader Sarah Mitchell countered that the government hasn't even listed it for debate.
It was eighth on Tuesday's agenda, making it unlikely to be discussed until later this week. Minister Courtney Houssos said the Coalition has held up 30-plus bills.
She pledged the government will push this one forward. The blame game continued as Mitchell argued the government was using the Hunter to deflect from the stall.

Why it mattersThousands of coal-region workers need a clear pathway to new jobs and training as the industry shifts; this bill is the government's main tool to deliver that, and the delay leaves them in limbo.
AustraliaNSW coal workers in the Hunter and similar regions cannot start retraining or transition planning until parliament debates the bill; the delay directly affects job security for families in those communities.
