NSW inquiry hears claims about Redeemer Baptist School principal

Edward Garth alleges he saw principal Jonathon Cannon walk out of a bathroom naked.

A NSW parliamentary inquiry heard disturbing claims about Redeemer Baptist School on Monday. Former student Emma Hughes said students sometimes had to share a bed with a teacher on school camps.

Ms Hughes's submission said nothing untoward happened to her during those stays. Edward Garth, 23, said he saw principal Jonathon Cannon walk out of a bathroom naked.

Emma Hughes also said staff regularly crossed conversational boundaries. Staff are often known by titles like "uncle".

The inquiry is examining how the Parramatta-based school is managed. It is also looking at how government bodies oversee it.

The Communities and Justice Department received 15 notifications of a risk of significant harm since 2004. None of them led to a field assessment.
