Bystanders stop knife-wielding carjacker fleeing with two children
Man arrested for carjacking with two children aged five to seven after dramatic public intervention.
Police responded to a welfare check in Lakemba on Saturday afternoon when a 36-year-old man fled in a vehicle carrying two young children. Officers gave chase through Campsie but called it off due to dangerous driving.
The car crashed at Parramatta Road and Bombay Street in Lidcombe, about nine kilometres away. Members of the public, including Nicholas Karagiannis, rushed to help.
Karagiannis said the man had a knife and moved between cars trying to escape. Bystanders managed to restrain him before police arrived.
The children suffered minor injuries. The man faces charges including aggravated robbery with wounding and police pursuit.
