Newcastle University plans second student body, risks $2m in UNSA funding
The university plans a second student body from 2027, which UNSA fears will divert over $2 million in student fees away.
The University of Newcastle Student's Association launched a petition titled "Hands off UNSA" after the university announced plans to create an additional student-led organisation from 2027. UNSA says the move could divert more than $2 million in Student Services and Amenities Fee revenue away from its frontline services.
The petition gathered over 546 signatures since launching on Friday, September 11. University senior deputy vice-chancellor Belinda Tynan says the new body will expand services for students at satellite campuses and online learners.
UNSA president Imogen Reid is concerned the split will create duplicate costs for leadership, media and administration. Reid said UNSA could have expanded to those campuses with the same funding.
Under federal law, universities must distribute 40 per cent of SSAF funds to student-led groups.
