Hudson Institute ceases independent operations as 75 jobs cut amid research funding crisis
The 66-year-old Hudson Institute will cease operating independently and merge with Monash University, cutting at least 75 jobs.
The Hudson Institute of Medical Research will stop operating independently and merge with Monash University in the first half of 2027. The institute employs 181 full-time and 90 part-time staff and will cut at least 75 jobs, mostly support and administrative roles.
The institute lost more than $5 million over two years. Revenue had not grown since 2021.
Victoria's medical research sector faces a broader funding crisis. The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is one of Melbourne's most prestigious research organisations.
It recently restructured after running a deficit of more than $82 million over two years. The National Ageing Research Institute warns it is at risk of closing by 2030 unless funding changes.
The sector's peak body estimates 10 of Victoria's 14 independent research institutes will close by 2030. This comes from years of flat federal and state funding.
