Cottesloe replants beach pines after 74% back them in survey
In unprecedented consultation, 74 per cent of 632 submissions backed replanting the pines residents initially opposed.
Five Norfolk Island pines were replanted in Cottesloe on 25 August. Seven pines were planted in July on Marine Parade.
Residents objected, citing the town's 2004 beach policy requiring community consultation before new plantings. The council removed the trees in early August and held a survey.
A total of 632 people responded. 74 per cent backed replanting.
The main reasons were more shade and trees, plus keeping Cottesloe's pine reputation. The remaining two pines will be planted elsewhere in town.
