Canberra opens alcohol-free night cafe with DJs and live music
Jordan Harrison has opened Trust Cafe, a not-for-profit sober venue in Civic open weekdays with local DJs and independent music.
Canberra native Jordan Harrison has opened Trust Cafe, an alcohol-free night venue in Civic that is open from 4pm to midnight every weekday with constant Canberra DJs serving up local independent music.
The cafe shares space with Trust FM, a new local radio station, above King O'Malleys in the Blank arts hub. Trust Cafe operates as a not-for-profit run largely by volunteers.
Half the profits go toward more alcohol-free club nights; the other half go to The Living Country, an Aboriginal-owned charity. Harrison saw thriving sober music scenes while working as a DJ and promoter in Seoul and Berlin, and wanted to bring that culture home.
Young Canberrans are drinking less than any previous generation, but few venues cater to people who want to go out at night without alcohol. By avoiding a liquor licence, Trust saves on security staff, insurance, and supplier costs.
