Sydney Kings open NBL title defence with 111-90 win over Cairns
Sydney's Davis led seven Kings to double-digit scores in a 111-90 rout of Cairns in the NBL season opener.
The Sydney Kings made a powerful statement in their title defence, crushing Cairns 111-90 at Afterpay Arena on Sunday. Kendric Davis, last season's grand final MVP, starred with 26 points and six assists, setting the tone early.
Captain Xavier Cooks added 18 points as the Kings' depth shone with seven players reaching double figures. Cairns' Keanu Pinder fought hard with 27 points at 65 per cent in his return to the league, but it was not enough to trouble the reigning champions.
Scoring machine Jack McVeigh was held to just seven points, a pivotal factor in the blowout. Sydney pulled away in the second half behind strong three-point shooting from Davis, Dellavedova, and first-gamer Will Johnston.
The margin swelled past 20 points by the final term as the Kings announced themselves as genuine contenders once again.
