P-plate driver avoids jail after rolling car while driving drunk

Ulekalo Tesfay Elma Mahare rolled his car on February 27 while nearly three times the legal alcohol limit for a P-plate driver.

A provisional driver who crashed his car while driving more than double the legal limit has avoided jail but lost his license for six months. Ulekalo Tesfay Elma Mahare appeared in Launceston Magistrates Court on October 9, 2026, and pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

On February 27, Mahare lost control on White Hills Road south of Launceston, drove into gravel, destroyed a fence and rolled his vehicle. A passerby found him and called emergency services.

His blood alcohol level was measured at 0.140, illegal for any P-plate holder who must have zero alcohol in their system. Deputy Chief Magistrate Ken Stanton said the reading was especially high but spared him jail time.

Mahare was fined $900 and told he cannot keep his license despite needing it for work.
