Trump says Russia and Ukraine agreed to an energy ceasefire
The ceasefire is said to start immediately, but Zelenskiy only heard of it from Trump's post.
US President Donald Trump says Ukraine and Russia have agreed to an energy ceasefire that starts immediately. Trump gave no further details in his social media post.
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Trump's post was the first he had heard of the deal. A senior Ukrainian official told Reuters that Ukraine is ready to agree to such a ceasefire, if Russia is.
Trump announced a similar energy ceasefire in mid-September, but neither side confirmed it. The news came hours after Zelenskiy rejected US pressure to halt refinery strikes on its own.
Zelenskiy said Ukraine would halt refinery attacks only if Moscow stopped hitting Ukrainian power infrastructure. On Saturday, Trump warned Zelenskiy he had better stop attacking Russian refineries.
High diesel prices, blamed on Trump's war in Iran, are weighing on Republicans before next month's midterm elections.

Why it mattersA real pause in strikes on energy sites would matter to power and fuel users, but so far it rests on Trump's post alone.
AustraliaDiesel is a big cost for Australian trucks, farms and freight, so any real drop in prices could be felt here.
