Family upgrades security after drunken guest threatens to burn home
A family spent thousands on security after a guest threatened to burn down their home.
Reagan Bear arrived at an Echuca property for New Year's Eve 2024 as a guest. Reagan Bear left as a criminal threat.
The 39-year-old Melbourne resident became drunk and increasingly agitated. Bear eventually threatened to burn down the house and kill residents.
When confronted, he fled to the property grounds. He was found carrying a knife and cigarette lighters.
A jerry can was discovered near the house. At a previous hearing, Bear was found guilty of one charge each.
Those were unlawful assault, threatening to destroy property, and threatening to kill. The family installed $10,000 worth of security cameras.
They replaced windows at $50,000. They also thought about getting a guard dog to feel safe again.
The magistrate noted Bear suffered a hyper-manic episode made worse by alcohol. He was sentenced without conviction to a supervised two-year community corrections order.
The order included alcohol abuse and mental health treatment.
