Saudi-led coalition claims Houthis attacked Medina power station

The Saudi-led coalition says Houthis attacked a power station in Medina that supplies electricity to the Prophet's Mosque.

The Saudi-led coalition says Houthis attacked a power station in Medina this week. One transformer was disabled but the power network still works.

The station supplies power to the Prophet's Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites. A Houthi military source denied the accusation and called it a lie.

A Houthi spokesman said the claim was cover. It hid Saudi Arabia's failure to prove the Houthis targeted Mecca two weeks earlier.

Saudi Arabia says it shot down a Houthi drone south of Mecca. The Houthis deny targeting Mecca or any Islamic holy site.

This is the worst fighting since a UN truce largely halted cross-border attacks in 2022. The Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in July.

They also made major territorial gains along Yemen's Red Sea coast.

Why it mattersThe Saudi-Houthi conflict is getting worse and threatens regional stability. It also risks global shipping and energy supplies that many nations depend on.

AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but prolonged Middle East conflict could eventually affect oil prices and shipping routes vital to Australian trade.
