Matt Roberts won Hillsdale Bowling Club's championship while using lawn bowls to manage the mental toll of an AFL season.
Sydney Swans midfielder Matt Roberts joined Hillsdale Bowling Club after moving to the Eastern Suburbs earlier this year. Roberts looked for a break from the intensity of top-level football.
Matt Roberts quickly claimed the club championship and became a regular competitor in the fours side. The season is demanding both mentally and physically, Roberts said.
He relies on hobbies outside football to rest and recover. While his teammates turn to surfing or golf to unwind, lawn bowls offers Roberts his own way to reset.
Hillsdale is changing too. It now has a diverse membership and growing numbers of younger players and women, far from the traditional bowls club look.
